The Grand Rue Sculptors have often collaborated with Mario Benjamin, renowned Haitian artist who has represented his country at the Venice, Sao Paulo and Johannesburg Biennales. The group created a spectacular carnival float for the 2006 Mardi Gras in Port au Prince made from over a hundred punctured and decorated metal oil drums, each lit from within. This work was shown again at the Kreyol Factory, Parc de la Villette, Paris in 2009. Another collaboration with Mario Benjamin devised and created ‘The Freedom Sculpture’ as a commission for the Museum of Liverpool and Christian Aid, launched in Liverpool in 2007 for the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the UK. Andre Eugene collaborated with Haitian conceptual video artist, Maksaens Denis to create a site specific work with video artist Maksaens Denis which was shown at La Dynamo, Paris in 2007. |
