The Grand Rue Sculptors have often collaborated with Mario Benjamin, renowned Haitian artist who has represented his country at the Venice, Sao Paulo and Johannesburg Biennales. The group created a spectacular carnival float for the 2006 Mardi Gras in Port au Prince made from over a hundred punctured and decorated metal oil drums, each lit from within. The collaborators devised and created ‘The Freedom Sculpture’ as a commission for the Museum of Liverpool and Christian Aid, launched in Liverpool in 2007 for the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slade trade in the UK.
